This web site is dedicated to educating men and their loved ones about Prostate Cancer; its diagnosis, treatments and side effects - preparing them to better care for the prostate cancer patient throughout the course of their illness and the grief beyond. A wealth of information, advice and research is offered to all regarding possible treatments the patient may consider in consultation with their medical team. Innovative ideas based on adaptations from personal experiences of many and learning through the years from other patients, doctors, seminars, studies, papers, etc. - all may be included.

This is a non-commercial, no ads, no sponsors - just a web site dedicated to those who have or have contact with this disease and is prepared by a prostate-cancer patient (diagnosed and treated in 1997). This makes it a neat clean, searchable web site that is easy to read and find what you are looking for. You can do all your research from this site - PHID, PubMed, BLOGs, Google. One might say this is a "searchers paradise" for prostate cancer.
At the bottom of every page you can access the "BLOG" "RSS" and "Podcast RSS" and the "PHID" and "PubMed" sites - all for your quick research. Learn how to use these - they will give you many answers (particularly the PHID and PubMed). The PubMed link will give you all "prostate cancer" studies in the last 30 days or you can make your own request by deleting the words in the "for" field and inserting your own. Check it often for new studies.
NOTE: Notice all links to other pages on this site or to other Internet sites are in blue and underlined to make them stand out. Just click on these blue and underlined words and you will go directly to the page or site referred to.

In today's society and the use of the Internet there are 8,000,000 hits on "prostate cancer" alone. The problem is that most of these hits are of large pharmaceutical companies and manufacturing companies that sell products for prostate cancer, Universities of all kinds that may or may not have even a decent prostate cancer unit but are selling trials, national organizations that are selling their own beliefs, large and small medical clinics and doctors that also have a product (a treatment) to sell and than thousands of herbal selling products guaranteed to cure. What is the common denominator of all of these - the word SELL. They all have something to sell and they are biased to that product or treatment. They all have the money to get their pages to the top of the list. As a small independent web site we cannot compete with their money and fame. But we try harder and try to be unbiased as one can.
Someone diagnosed with prostate cancer start to learn about his disease from these biased web sites and believes them - hook line and sinker. The patient makes up his mind for a treatment that may or may not be the best for him. If it is the wrong treatment the disease will re-occur and at this point it is not back to step one but now you are dealing with a much more serious disease that may well kill you in time. There is little curative treatment but mostly palliative once you have failed the initial treatment. The first choice of treatment is so critical of your future - you may live or die by this choice.
Is there an answer to getting unbiased information? We believe so and the start is research on this web site. Here we cover all treatments and point you to some of the latest information available. Time spent here is far more effective than browsing the net.
How long should I research? Since it is your life you are talking about let me tell you that I searched for 4 months for 30 to 60 hours a week to make my treatment decision. I had no site like this. I had to dig and dig and spent many hours in a Medical library. There just was not a lot of information available off the net at that time. I have continued to search for answers since that time (1997) for information that would help others. This site is an accumulation of that research and will save you hours of Internet research. And if this site is not enough I refer you out to many other sites that I found useful - biased as they may be but at that point you can understand their bias.
Just to give you an idea of what this site covers, just click on "Site Map" and read down the table of contents. Next pick a word in the prostate cancer field and do a search of the whole site by inserting the word in the "Site Search" box at the top of every page. For example if you insert "surgery" you will probably get some 70 hits and if you want to narrow down surgery just to the removal of the prostate gland search for prostatectomy and you will get some 30 hits. And you can do the same thing for every treatment modality or other information you may want to know.
If you want to talk to other patients in discussion groups about what they did or ask questions about your disease - you have a list of these Groups/Forums to join at "Mailing Lists and Forums". More information is being added on a frequent basis. And if this is not enough there are not only links on many pages to additional information but a whole Category on "Educational and Research Links" that will give you access to much additional information. This is just a small amount of what is offered to you here.
Really there is no end to the research that you can do starting with the 200 pages here (it is like several books) and expanding out as you like.
This Prostate-Help web site is a virtual encyclopedia of information covering all treatments and aspects of prostate cancer in a searchable format. Most everything you wanted to know about prostate cancer is here. We try to show all aspects of this disease and show what we believe to be the best information available.
We have tried to make a combination of our writings and links to what we believe to be the best Internet sites so you would not have to search and not know what you find - we did the walking!

There are two pages which will give you help and instructions on how to use this web site. It will certainly help you understand the make-up of the site and will show you how to get around easily, thus saving you time. You can search the site from every page with a maximum of three clicks. To access these two pages click on "About This Site" and "How to Use This Web Site" or click on the pages in the left hand column. In addition you can now have an email sent you anytime the page of your choice is changed - see Watch This Page . And also important is out Guestbook /Comment page where others have left comments and so can you.

Because of the established name "Prostate-Help" and its acceptance in the medical field and its popularity on the Internet - other companies, clinics, organizations, and just plain people who have a product to sell have picked up the name and changed it in different ways like Prostate-Help, etc. You will know you have the right web site when you use only http://www.prostate-help.org (or http://prostate-help.org) - the "org" is important - or when you see this web site with the photo "Don't walk alone". You will also know it is usually the true Prostate-Help when there is a hyphen between Prostate and Help and I, Don Cooley, am always identified.
Some of the worse users of the name are those who practice voodoo, organic or herbal medicine and try to convince you not to go to conventional treatments. Certainly they are NO help nor can they cure!!! Be careful please - the net is full of unsavory schemes to take your money. If you can't find the true name of an owner on the site - than it is not trustworthy. The owner and the affiliations should always be identified.

All of these pages and information have been written in the last 10 years and then updated along the way. In early 2008 I completely re-published the web site into this format with the result that almost every page was looked at, re-written, updated and ever page will be dated from mid 2008 and later. New studies were added, new links were added, etc. Any change in the page will give it a new date. By the very nature of some pages they automatically change daily because of the links to changing information - these pages are not dated. Some pages are very static with no medical information and these pages may or may not be dated.
My intent on some of the links is to give you updated information by having you search certain sites (like PubMed) that has new studies published daily. As time goes along I have tried to date the pages. However because things move slowly in this disease even the older dated pages may be as good as the new ones. If there is a page or comment that bothers you please let me know by using the "Questions for Admin." page.

I am responsible for every page of this site and the writer of every word and opinion unless it is attributed to others. The content on this Prostate-Help web site is not intended nor recommended as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your own physician or other qualified health care professional regarding any medical condition. We attempt to give you some information to better help you to understand this disease and to work with your medical professional. We believe that an educated patient will no doubt get better treatments in the long run. Don Cooley, Owner, Editor, etc. My story is at "Who is this Don Cooley" page.
